TrustThink has taken a long-term approach to this challenge by investing directly in hands-on AI education, grounded in real engineering practice rather than abstract coursework.

Many AI education programs focus on theory or isolated tools, leaving students unprepared for the realities of building and securing AI-enabled systems.

Key gaps often include:

  • Understanding how data is collected, cleaned, and managed for AI use
  • Translating algorithms into working software systems
  • Recognizing security and trust risks in AI pipelines
  • Appreciating how AI models behave, and fail, in real environments

Addressing these gaps requires exposure to real problems, real tools, and real expectations.

The TrustThink STEM Scholars Program

TrustThink established the TrustThink STEM Scholars Program at Our Lady of Peace School (OLP) in San Diego, the oldest all-girls school in the region, with the goal of introducing students to practical AI development and cybersecurity concepts at an early stage.

Rather than focusing on demonstrations or simulations alone, the program emphasizes hands-on learning rooted in real engineering workflows.

Immersive Internships in AI and Cybersecurity

Through the program, TrustThink has brought on up to 12 interns per year, working directly with TrustThink engineers under the mentorship of Allison Lane.

Interns gain exposure to a wide range of real-world activities, including:

  • Writing and reviewing code used in AI-enabled applications 
  • Managing and preparing data for AI model training 
  • Developing and testing AI models and AI agents 
  • Evaluating AI software for security vulnerabilities and weaknesses 
  • Understanding how trust, data integrity, and security affect AI behavior 

This work mirrors the same technical rigor applied in TrustThink’s professional projects, giving students early insight into how AI systems are actually built and assessed.

Building Confidence and Technical Fluency

By working alongside practicing engineers, students learn not just how AI works, but how to think critically about implementation, risk, and responsibility. The program helps demystify AI and cybersecurity while building confidence, technical fluency, and professional skills that carry forward into higher education and future careers.

The Impact

Through the TrustThink STEM Scholars Program, TrustThink has:

  • Provided sustained, hands-on AI and cybersecurity training to students
  • Exposed participants to the full AI lifecycle, from data to deployment considerations
  • Helped prepare a new generation of engineers to engage with AI thoughtfully and securely
  • Demonstrated a scalable model for industry-led STEM education rooted in real practice
